This is a brilliant little radio. Enough people have written about it since its release back in 2003 +/- so I am not going to rewrite what’s already been written, other than to say it was a pity that 4M (70Mhz) was missed out. I will just add a little about my mobile installation, the issues I have had and how I have resolved them, and where I have not. I purchased it through one of the main dealers here in the UK as a package deal including the ATAS-120 antenna, the YSK-857 separation kit and a new 'hands free' boom microphone a month or so after my trusty FT-790 bit the dust. I have since added the MH-59A8J Remote Control DTMF microphone but that gave a whole set of new issues that I will come to later I have installed it in 3 different vehicles now a Kia Sportage, a Toyota Emina (I know, it is the import version of the Estima), and now my Fiat Cinquecento which looks a dodgem with the ATAS or a 2M whip fitted, so I normally just leave a 2M ¼ wave fitted which also works well on 70cm. The biggest issue I have had when installing the radio is providing the power to the radio. As I have always fixed the main radio body in the boot of the vehicle, the problem is finding a hole in the firewall / bulkhead large enough to fit the 6mm2cables through that supply the 20 plus amp's when ruining at 100W on HF. So far I have been lucky and not had to drill any new holes, as there has always been one I could use albeit in the most awkward place it could possibly be. Taking the power direct from the battery, with a fuse in both the +ve and -ve lines, is the preferred method. When I had the radio in the Emina I used the 'cigar lighter' / power socket in the car, keeping the power down to 10W so as not to overheat the socket.
